Description

Toyota 3.0 D-4D EGR Engine 1KD-FTV – 2007–2011

A robust 3.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine designed for compatible Toyota Hilux applications. The 1KD-FTV features 2,982 cc displacement, 16-valve DOHC construction, common-rail direct injection, intercooling, variable-nozzle turbocharging and EGR technology.

With a displacement of 2,982 cc, the 1KD-FTV features a 4-cylinder inline configuration, 16-valve DOHC cylinder head, common-rail fuel injection and turbocharging. Toyota documentation lists a 96.0 mm bore and 103.0 mm stroke. The 1KD-FTV was offered in different specifications depending on vehicle, market and model year. Common Hilux versions produce approximately 120–126 kW, with torque figures around 343 Nm, while other 1KD-FTV calibrations can differ. Toyota’s European Hilux documentation, for example, lists a 3.0 D-4D specification at 126 kW (171 hp) and 343 Nm, while Toyota technical documentation also lists a 120 kW version.

This engine is an excellent replacement option for compatible Toyota Hilux 3.0 D-4D applications from approximately 2007–2011, subject to the exact vehicle specification, engine calibration, emissions equipment and supplied accessories.

Toyota’s Hilux specifications confirm the 2,982 cc displacement, 96 × 103 mm bore/stroke and 17.9:1 compression ratio for one 1KD-FTV specification, while Toyota technical material documents another 1KD-FTV calibration at 120 kW and 343 Nm.

EGR System

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system is part of the engine’s emissions-control and combustion-management system. It recirculates a controlled quantity of exhaust gas back into the intake system under appropriate operating conditions, helping reduce combustion temperatures and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

On the 1KD-FTV, Toyota’s engine-control system uses an intake shutter valve in conjunction with EGR operation.

Performance and Capability

The 1KD-FTV is designed to provide substantial torque at relatively low engine speeds, making it well suited to the Toyota Hilux’s role as a working pickup.

Its combination of:

  • 3.0-litre displacement

  • Turbocharging

  • Intercooling

  • Common-rail fuel injection

  • Variable-nozzle turbocharger

  • Strong low-speed torque

makes the engine suitable for load carrying, towing, highway driving, off-road use and commercial applications.

A Toyota specification for the 3.0 D-4D 170 lists 126 kW (171 hp) at 3,600 rpm and 343 Nm from 1,400–3,400 rpm. Other 1KD-FTV versions have different calibrations, so the original vehicle specification should always be checked before ordering.

Compatibility

This engine is primarily associated with the Toyota Hilux 3.0 D-4D, particularly the seventh-generation Hilux applications.

Depending on market and specification, the 1KD-FTV was also used in other Toyota vehicles, including certain Fortuner, Land Cruiser Prado and HiAce applications. However, components and engine calibrations can differ between applications.
